LACY H. HUNT, Ph.D.
Dr. Hunt, an internationally known economist. His bond fund had a total return of 41.23% in 2011, 12.8% for 5 years and 10.15% for 10 years.
He is a student of Yale economist Irving Fisher, author of Booms and Depressions: Some First Principles and The Debt-Deflation Theory of the Great Depression.
It was not insufficiency of aggregate demand by consumers, businesses and government or insufficiency of money supply which drove the depression of the 1930s as Keynes and Friedman argued.
The driver was excessive debt, said Fisher.
When debt becomes “cancerous,” it must be surgically removed before a cure can be obtained.
In his talk to us, Dr. Hunt will address the excessive indebtedness in the United States and other major Countries and examine how prior periods of extreme over-indebtedness have been resolved. He will also present a case why these extreme debt levels constitute a major roadblock to recovery and a return to the traditional business cycle.
This topic is very relevant to today debt ceiling debate in Washington and the European debates concerning Greece’s staying in or leaving the European Union.
Dr. Lacy H. Hunt, is Executive Vice President of Hoisington Investment Management Company (HIMCO), a firm that manages $5.8 billion for pension funds, endowments, insurance companies and others. He is Vice-Chairman of HIMCO’s strategic investment policy committee and also Chief Economist for the Wasatch Hoisington Treasury Bond Fund.
Lacy Hunt is the author of two books, and numerous articles in leading magazines, periodicals and scholarly journals. Included among the publishers of his articles are. Barron’s, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the Journal of Finance, the Financial Analysts Journal and the Journal of Portfolio Management. Previously, he was Chief U.S. Economist for the HSBC Group, one of the world’s largest banks. A native Texan, Dr. Hunt also served as Senior Economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
He earned his BA from the University of the South (1964), his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (1966), and his Ph.D. in Economics from the Fox School of Business and Management of Temple University (1969). Dr. Hunt is an Honorary Life Trustee of the Board of Trustees of Temple University and served on the Board from 1987 until 2010. He received the Abramson Award from the National Association for Business Economics for “outstanding contributions in the field of business economics.”
